Bubba Pollard has another dream season going as he looks
to chase down his win record from the 2009 season where
he captured the checkered flag 12 times during the year.
Already with 10 wins, Pollard went to South Alabama
Speedway (AL) and took the win in the penultimate leg of
the Viper Pro Late Models event of the season, the
Copperhead 100.
Pollard stayed red hot in the hot weather by winning the
Pro Late Model event and the Modified race as well.
"It was so hot during the day we didn't practice much," said Pollard. “We were third-quick in time trials, which left us starting fourth in the race. From there we worked the high side and moved real quick. We set a pace early on that I felt was way too fast, but worked out and we were able to pressure Korey (Ruble) for the lead with about 40 laps to go and hung on for the win."
This season, Pollard has taken young Brandon Odom under his wing and helped the Florida driver develop as a driver. It appears the roots of that help are starting to show as Pollard's victory was not enough to give him the overall points lead in the Viper Series as he chases Odom for the title.
"Earlier in the race Brandon Odom had a good car and he could have gotten by me," said Pollard. "I wanted to keep him back there because I might not have been able to get back by him if he did. Brandon has become a very mature race driver and he's got a lot of laps and experiences the last few years. Heck, we trail behind him for the championship, but we will see if we can't get by him at the next race."
The next race will be the final point race of the 2011 season for the Pro Late Models at South Alabama Speedway. The Cottonmouth 100 will be run on Saturday, September 10th. The final race of the season for the Pro Late Models will be run on October 15th as a part of the Alabama Pro weekend. The event has been the staple 200 lap finale for the last few seasons.
Pollard will return to action for the Blizzard Series on August 12th at Five Flags Speedway (FL), the Miller Lite Series, Saturday August 13th for the next two rounds of the Gulf Coast Championship Series. Pollard comes into the final four races with a four point lead in the overall standings.
"We have had the points lead at this point in the past when it comes to all the battles down there," said Pollard. "Blizzard Series, Gulf Coast Series, Miller Lite Series, it doesn't matter unless you can put it all together. Right now we lead the Gulf Coast and Miller Lite points, but we want that Blizzard title as well. We just need to have a strong run and be better in qualifying because that's where we are losing points."
